Loading...Popcorn ceilings were popular decades ago because they were cheap to install and hid drywall imperfections. Today, they only serve to date your home, trap cobwebs and dust, and make rooms feel dark and small.
At DPS Design Painting Services, we take the mess and stress out of removing them. Our crews use heavy-duty plastic containment systems to protect your home. Once the popcorn is scraped off, we professionally skim coat, texture, and paint the ceiling to create a beautiful, modern look.
Pricing varies based on square footage, ceiling height, and whether the popcorn has been previously painted over. Call us for an exact quote.
| Ceiling Condition | Estimated Price |
|---|---|
| Unpainted Popcorn (Per Sq Ft) | $1.50 - $2.50 |
| Painted Popcorn (Per Sq Ft) | $2.50 - $3.50 |

We remove or completely wrap all furniture. Then, we use heavy-duty plastic sheeting to tape off the floors and walls entirely, creating a sealed "bubble" to capture all debris.
We lightly mist the ceiling with water to loosen the acoustic texture, then carefully hand-scrape the popcorn away, revealing the flat drywall beneath.
Because the drywall underneath is rarely perfect, we apply a skim coat of joint compound to smooth out any gouges or seams, followed by a modern texture of your choice (knockdown, orange peel, etc).
Finally, we apply a high-quality primer and two coats of premium flat ceiling paint to give the room a stunning, finished look. We then roll up the plastic, taking all the mess with us.

The process itself generates a lot of debris and dust, but our professional crew completely seals off the room. We run plastic sheeting from the ceiling edge all the way across the floor, ensuring absolutely no dust escapes into the rest of your home.
Painted popcorn ceilings are much harder to scrape because the paint acts as a seal, preventing the water from softening the texture. We have specialized tools and methods to remove painted popcorn, though it usually takes slightly more time and labor.
No. Once the popcorn is scraped off, the drywall beneath is usually imperfect (you will see the original drywall tape and mud lines). We apply a new skim coat, sand it smooth, apply a modern texture (like knockdown or orange peel), and then fully prime and paint it.
If your home was built before 1980, there is a chance the acoustic texture contains asbestos. We recommend having a small sample tested by a lab before removal begins. If asbestos is present, specialized abatement procedures must be followed.
